Health and diet is an arising issue in America due to many factors and I believe each can be related to one another. In the book In Defense of Food it talked about how the average American had an average weight gain of twelve pounds since the 1960’s changing the majority spending from food to healthcare, which was ultimately caused by the industrialization of food products. Therefore, I would like to argue that health and diet have not been the issues most directly affected by the political shift of the post-1960’s period. Issues like war, riots, liberations, social issues, inequality, rights, counterculture, movements, environment the government, and the economy all intertwined to create a larger concern to this political shift. The Black Panther Party arose as a revolutionary Black Nationalist and socialist organization as well as Congress of Racial Equality which both played a pivotal role for African Americans in the civil rights movement. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 prohibited the racial discrimination to voting. Linking this back to an ideology that begun the anti-war movement triggered by the counterculture and Vietnam. The civil-rights movement, anti-war movement and all of the groups that developed had a greater affect of other races and people who saw these political shifts. For example, Cesar Chavez was an American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activists who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association which triggered the recognition of Mexican Americans, among Hispanics and their racial discrimination as well as improving working empowerment. Also, the gay liberation and LGBT social movements inspired by thee civil rights-movement and the women’s movement. These groups inspired the gay rights movements by encouraging gay pride.
