In Delirium, Lena Haloway is a seventeen-year-old girl who is waiting anxiously for her eighteenth birthday, when she can have a procedure to stop her from falling in love; a condition that has been ruled a disease. Her procedure will mark a time when all her pain will be removed, and it will allow her to lead a safe and conventional life. Along with her aunt, uncle and cousins, Lena lives in Portland, Maine, which like all U.S. cities is surrounded by guards and electric fences. No one is allowed in or out, and no one is allowed to live in the Wilds outside the fences. Later, while jogging, Lena and Hana meet a guard, Alex, the same boy Lena saw in the observation deck, patrolling the city's fence. Lena is surprised that Alex is cured and not an invalid. She does not see Alex again for several weeks, until she reluctantly goes to an illegal party in the outskirts of the city to find Hana, who started listening to underground music and going to illegal parties.
