Religious Resistance Against Art Restrictions The media that surrounds us today allows the viewing and communication of our thoughts and ideas on a widespread range, while also allowing us to directly show support or opposition to certain arguments that plague our every day lives. There are many supporters and opponents who have been known for their stance in specific arguments, and who are seen as spokesmen and promoters of these thoughts and ideas, these people use modern media like billboards, airplane banners, blimps, and commercials to portray their message, and gain followers for their beliefs. The main focus in this painting is on David and Goliath, they are the most monumental figures, taking up most of the space and being the most in focus, while in the background soldiers are hard to see and not very detailed, only a piece of the battle can be seen. The red tinge of David’s face shows aggression and deliberate force when swinging the sword, while the blue behind him seems to be the presence of God, which showers him in light, and gives him the strength and perseverance to continue this daunting task. The contrast of color adds to the visualization of good versus evil, as David seems illuminated, while Goliath is covered in more darkness and shadows. Rubens paints the moment when David, having knocked him down and taken his sword, is about to decapitate Goliath. This scene selection is immersive, and filled with action. There is a strong emphasis of circular movement and a sense of motion in David’s stance over Goliath, and the impending swing that will end his life. The restless motion of the swing draws ones eyes and gives off a feeling of having walked in on David about to behead Goliath, while the vivid clashes of light and shadow give the viewer hope and consolation when it comes to Catholic Counter Reformation and the
