The Civil War. Louis P. Masur’s book, The civil War: a Concise History, Is a book that gives an overview of the civil war from 18 to 1800, Providing multiple causes an consequences that emerged from the war. The book begins by reviewing the origins of the war. Chapter one covers the issues between northern and southern states and the tension over right and slave possession. The tension created a conflict that raised a number of political, social, and military events that then proceeded into a battle to abolish slavery from the colonies.
When one looks back in our history, we have always thought that everyone suffered after the Civil War. The Civil War after all was extremely destructive to anything and anyone involved. However, Robert Tracy McKenzie did not believe that everyone suffered a great deal. In fact, in his article, “Civil War and Socioeconomic Change in the Upper South: The Survival of Local Agricultural Elites in Tennessee, 1850-1870,” he discussed how the top five percent of the elite farmers were still prosperous. McKenzie’s article focuses on all three regions in Tennessee, but only a few select counties.
1. What was the purpose of the Civil War for: The North/Union? Preserve the union, and then later on ending slavery. The South/Confederacy?
The North had many advantages one of these was Abraham Lincoln, the north also had a larger population, and a large advantage at 5-to-two in military power. Not only were they large in population the Union was also very wealthy and controlled shipping. The North also had industrial power, more railroads, and more land. As you can see the United States had many more advantages than the Rebels, but they also have quite a few disadvantages. One disadvantage was that the Northern armies had little motivation because they weren't fighting for a cause.
The southern secession from the Union increased pressure between the South (Confederacy) and the North (Union). The South’s attempts on withdrawal proved the fact that the South and the North were destined to fall apart after growing tensions between the two sides. For years, historians have been debating the point if the South had the right to secede from the Union. While some historians argue that the South could leave due to legality, others claim that it is a breaking the Constitutional Oath that the states would stay together. The secession of the Confederacy was a primary cause of the civil war.
From Christopher Columbus to the Pilgrims and Native Americans to the Civil War and slavery, all the way to the present, the author picks apart twelve textbooks, compares them, and shows they are racially and socially biased, and are written by similar authors. Finally, in the last two chapters, Loewen digs into why textbooks continue to teach history this way, and shows some of the effects of giving students the misinformation and lack of important information that our textbooks
The Civil War was a controversial war due to the difference of opinion of the states. Texas involved themselves with the bitter side, even though most of the odds were stacked against them. What prompted them to do this? Aside from it being located in the south, Texas fought in the Civil War because its views of states’ rights, slavery, and sectionalism were the exact same as the rest of the Confederate states, and not the Union states. Texas felt that states’ rights were very important when it came to protecting its people.
The Civil War was not inevitable. The Civil War started when many sides and opinions clashed in a debate that caused the deadliest war to Americans in history. The war began when slave states began to spread slavery into the West and increased in the South. This caused riots in the states and political instability when the issue caused the rising of 2 new parties. But was this war avoidable?
When Texas entered the U.S in 1845, it was the largest state that we had at the time. It covered over 250,000 square miles, with various terrains and resources spread throughout its territory. Upon its entry into the U.S, Texas was granted by the Articles of Annexation the ability to divide into up to five individual states by congress, due to its vast size. While the division of Texas into separate states never occurred, it is interesting to see what the effect of the separation would have had on Texas and the U.S. At the time, there were people on both sides of the issue, representing the pros and cons of Texas’ separation into several states.
During the Mid 1800’s marked a crucial period for our country. It will have a big effect on the development of our country. Throughout this time, our country was split, split into two sections, the North and the South. The Civil war was a war fought against the North and the South, the Union and the Confederates, from 1861-1865.
The Southern and Northern states differentiate on many issues, which ultimately led them towards a Civil War. There stood deep social, economic, and political disparities between the North and the South. These modifications stemmed from the understanding of the United States Constitution on both sides. In the end, most of these disputes about the rights of states directed to the Civil War. There existed reasons other than slavery on behalf of the South 's breakaway.
The American Civil War was the bloodiest war fought on American soil. The Civil War was fought over whether or not slavery should be legal and continue in the U.S. Before the war was fought many compromises were made to prevent the war. One was the Compromise of 1850. The Compromise of 1850 was the most efficient way to settle the conflict of the amount of slave states and abolitionist states in the senate after the Mexican American War. The abolitionist states outnumbered the slave states in the senate.
The Civil War was actually the War of Southern Succession. The Southerners were concerned that their political and economic situation was seriously threatened by Northern bankers and industrialists. The Southerners paid the larger portion of tariffs which benefited the Northerners. The Southerners were also concerned that their land and property would be dominated by banks owned by the Northerners. Theses concerns led to what is known as the Civil War.
In today’s schools we have at least 5 hours of academics, but in Bradbury’s world, the students get a shorter time to learn unimportant material. “‘An hour of TV class, an hour of basketball or baseball or running, another hour of transcription history or painting pictures, and more sports, but do you know, we never ask questions... they just run the answers at you’” (Bradbury 27). Instead of being taught mathematics, English, science or social sciences, they learn about technology and sports, which won’t help them succeed in the future.
The Civil War was a very influential turning point in the history of the United States. The war not only strengthened the connection of the states, specifically between states in the north and south, but it also resulted in the end of the old way of life in the south, known as the old south. The way of life style in the Old South was loved by many, Rhett from Gone With the Wind being one of them. Rhett and his future wife, but current friend Scarlett were fleeing Atlanta after an attack from the north when Rhett told Scarlett that she was witnessing the end of the Old South. Rhett is truly speaking the truth in this scene.
