The Civil War was fought on U.S soil during the 1800’s for the cause to bring the nation back together and later in the war, to end slavery. As a result, The North or the Union ended up beating their opponent, the Confederacy. Why did the Union beat the Confederates? The Union won this battle because of material, economic and population advantages and the role that the African-Americans played in the war. First, the union had advantages in material, economics, and population.

During this time period there was many writers writing both for and against the South. A major person in history, Thomas Jefferson, would write against the North and for the South. That is only one of many example from back then, but at this time some of the greatest critics of the South were from the South. Some people believe the South has such a long memory on the civil war because they lost, and even though some people in the current South want many of their peers to just forget about that time in history, many will not give it up.
The Civil War was the result of uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states. When Abraham Lincoln won the election in 1860, as the first Republican president on a platform promising to keep slavery out of the territories, seven slave states in the deep South seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America. Military during the Civil War was off, but equalled out in terms of stats, North having better leadership and South having better weapons. As the United States expanded westward, two new territories were created from the issue of slavery in the United States. The U.S. government let the two new territories decide whether or not to allow slavery.
For these reasons and many more the North was the real winner of the civil war. Economy, something that is knowing to go up and down all the time. In most situations people would expect war to stress the economy or destroy it. This was not the case for the North. The North’s economy did better during the war.
Deliverance and emancipation began for many slaves the very day when Union Soldiers reached the townships and territories of the slave-holding states. Countless southern landowners and their families walked away from their plantations and farms as the war approached, and every city or location where the Union soldiers stepped, they were greeted by more and more African Americans looking for safety and refuge within the ranks of the Union forces. At the end of the war effort, approximately 4.2 million slaves were set free; however, these newly freedmen had absolutely nothing. Frederick Douglas said, “The freedmen were let alone – by everyone but their enemies” (Sterling, 1976). Nearly all were homeless, uneducated and all they had ever known

These reasons helped the North win the civil war and play a big part in how successful they would be. With having advantages, better tactics when fighting, and also a higher population, the North would use strategic planning to fight the South and ultimately win the civil war.

The Civil War was a long and hard-fought war and considered the deadliest war in U.S. history. The war was between the Union and the Confederacy over disagreements between the two sides. With the Union winning in the end, these are the three most significant reasons the Union won and had the biggest advantage in the war are that they had a much larger population, they had a much more optimal economy for war as well as more advanced technology and transportation. Their military advantage was the way that they had skills that made them great soldiers and solid military convention, this implied they battled a cautious war. Their trained soldiers had hunting skills and went to military school. The confederates knew the domain they were fighting on unlike the North. The North's fundamental disadvantage was that they were attacking unfamiliar land with few prepared soldiers, which implied they were left going into obscure domains attempting to conquer an large area to bring the South over into the Union. In some ways it appeared like an unjustifiable fight since the North had a long way to transport troops and supplies, however they had advantages, as well.
One, in particular, would be the North’s abundance of soldiers. Edwin C. Bearss claims, “The South lost the Civil War because of a number of factors. It was inherently weaker in the various essentials to win a military victory in the North. The north had a population of more than twenty-two million people to the South’s nine and a half million of whom four and a half million were slaves”. With the North having more people to go to war with, it was clear their army would be able to defeat the South.
The North had many advantages. They beat the South in population they could draw soldiers from. The North had 22 million citizens where the South only had 5.5 million citizens. The North could transport supplies and people faster because of their roads, canals, and railroads. However the South disconnected from itself with barely any railroads and hard to move soldiers and goods from place to place.
The Southern and Northern states differentiate on many issues, which ultimately led them towards a Civil War. There stood deep social, economic, and political disparities between the North and the South. These modifications stemmed from the understanding of the United States Constitution on both sides. In the end, most of these disputes about the rights of states directed to the Civil War. There existed reasons other than slavery on behalf of the South 's breakaway.
