In Search of Respect I personally enjoyed Philippe Bourgois book In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio. Bourgois published his book in 1995, and discussed his experiences of living in El Barrio (East Harlem) very detailed. Bourgois moved to this district in 1985 to study the impact of imposed racial segregation and economic marginalization (intro pg. 1). The inner city in east Harlem was majority Puerto Ricans. The insight that was captured in this book was very remarkable. Compared to most areas of our country, this area at the time was high in poverty.
