In the novel “Something Wicked This Way Comes” by Ray Bradbury a wise tone is seen every time Charles Halloway addresses the carnival. The author shows this when Charles says “they make you empty promises, you stick out your neck and- wham!” (Bradbury 200). This shows a wise tone because it shows how Charles realizes how the carnival tricks people into giving them their souls by making them false promises about their desires and end up turning people into freaks. The author uses this wise tone to emphasize the fact that Charles was the mentor of the boys, and he knew that there was something evil about the carnival.

For most people, the words evil and harsh are not the typical traits used to describe an elderly woman. However, in the short story “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson, the 71 year old character Miss Adela Strangeworth, has a dark predatory nature hiding behind her highly respectable and sweet exterior. As our understanding of evil develops, we begin to see evil all around us. Although we hold common societal definitions of evil, each person is bound to view evil slightly different from others. Someone might consider alcoholism evil, while others consider it normal: someone might believe racism is evil, while others believe it is natural.
