Carmen DiRaddo: How did the invention of the telegraph and railroads influence the creation of the telephone? What impact has technology had on your life? Well, the evolution of these innovative electronics and devices has been exceedingly beneficial to our society. The telegraph was a communication system that used the method of Morris code to send off messages. These messages were sent around by using static electricity created by the power of the railroads. Telegraphs were invented in 1837 by a man named Samuel Morse (McNeese, 2017). On the other hand, railroads were created to transport large amounts of people and supplies quickly and efficiently. Inventions like these sparked the creation of the modern day telephone, which has been evolving since 1849 and into …show more content…
Maine exploded in 1889; telegraphs allowed the government to quickly receive an alert as well as any other important information about this unsuspected tragedy (Woodward, 1898). If the government wasn’t alerted as quickly about this incident, there likely would have been a very different outcome. This circumstance eventually led to the Spanish-American War, but without the direct communication from the telegraph, there likely would have been misunderstandings about what happened. Troops would have also been less prepared if they weren’t alerted beforehand. This could possibly make the scenario even worse. In addition to the telegraph, over time, more than 1,000 telegraph lines were laid and over 6 million messages were transmitted through the Union during the course of the war (Bates, 2017). These numbers prove that the telegraph was very significant and a constant source of communication throughout this time period. Nowadays, people are able to send immediate messages with new and improved devices, such as iPhones. Without the invention of the telegraph, creators would have never been inspired to create such a useful object, which is something that most people use in their everyday
