“This is not a war for the independence of one or two colonies, but for the independence of one nation” (The Patriot). In the 2000 film, The Patriot, the struggle for independence in the Revolutionary War is depicted through Benjamin Martin, a single father to seven children living on a farm in South Carolina. When Benjamin's sons, Gabriel and Thomas, hear about the war, they want to fight and defend the new country. Fighting in the French and Indian War previously, Benjamin wants nothing to do with war due to the violence and destruction he experienced and tries to prevent his sons from fighting. This is an inaccuracy for this time in history, as slaves were seen as less than normal humans at the time. Even after the Civil War, which took place nearly a century after the Revolutionary War, African Americans were still lynched and viewed as less than white people. Because this movie takes place during the Revolutionary War, slaves would not be treated with the respect they are in the movie, and they also wouldn’t be happy about serving someone. However, slaves did fight in the war on both sides, from the promise of freedom and a small payment if they did so. The biggest reason slaves fought in wars was the promise of liberty. According to PBS, “100,000 African Americans escaped, died, or were killed during the American Revolution” (PBS). Many of these slaves died from injuries or illness and others were killed while fighting. A lot of slaves also ran away or “escaped” because of the harsh conditions and did not feel like they were getting paid enough or did not get the freedom they were expecting.
