In the world of Louisiana culinary arts one dish stands out. The recipe is a masterpiece created by an infusion of various cultures, combining okra from West Africa, a European fish stew, and a Native American spice. Thus, gumbo is a basic concoction of ingredients widely available in Louisiana, thrown into a pot and made with love. They have a wide variety of appetizers and main courses. My favorite appetizer has to be their black pepper chicken wings. It is a mouth watering combination of sweet and salty and has the perfect amount of spiciness for a variety of different palettes. For the main courses, I especially love the ribs with a side of sauted green beans. When you look at the dish, you immediately want to devour the smoldering red, tender ribs, as well as the juicy seasoned beans.
Food Deserts Food deserts are spaces that are at least a mile or more over from any super markets and/or shopping centers. They are usually located in places where most of the people who live there do not have reliable transportation. Most businesses in food deserts have corner stores and fast food restaurants, but there usually are not any healthy food places or choices in the area. Supermarkets have been harshly judged for leaving out a large population of the Black and Latino population in cities such as Memphis, Los Angeles and Detroit. These cities are desperate for more healthy food besides the many fast food places they have to offer.
The United States is generally viewed as a country of abundance with food plentifully available; however, throughout the United States there are cities and towns that lack access to healthful food sources. These areas are commonly referred to as food deserts. The USDA specifically defines food deserts as areas that are “low-income census tract where either a substantial number or share of residents have low access to a supermarket or large grocery store. ”1 Therefore, areas that have multiple fast food restaurants or convenience stores but no grocery store may also fall into this category.

Families in low-income neighborhoods tend to be less healthy than families in high-income neighborhoods due to the unhealthier foods they have to eat.

Everyday food Abstract The article discusses the role of food as an instrument of identity and a channel of contact through cultures. This is discussed drawing from three cases of Italian food culture hybridization spanning from the early 20th century to the first decade of the 2000s: the role of Italian food in Italian-American identity as depicted in Leonardo Coviello’s work; the meeting of Southern and Northern food cultures following the Italian internal migrations in the ‘50s and ‘60s; the food practices of international migrants in the context of the global flows of people and commodities in present day Italy. In this regard, food plays an essential role in the rebuilding of a familiar context in which migrants can feel temporarily
