The 1980 's saw many changes that were made to society. The 19th amendment had just turned 60 (Gertner and Heriot). Apple and PC computers were beginning to take off, and Sally Ride became the first woman in space (National Geographic). However, it doesn 't seem that the positive changes being made to our society were being reflected in our media; due to the fact that Hollywood was still turning out the old "damsel in distress" stereotype for its leading ladies. Which is evident in the movie Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. On the surface this is an action and adventure movie with a fearless hero who will stop at nothing to find treasure and save the one he loves; however, when a deeper look is taken the movie can be seen for what it is, a thrown together concoction that reinforces traditional gender roles. Marion, the only female protagonist in the movie, she is a very bland character who is always in need of rescuing. She has no personality, or anything else that is interesting about her. There are also a few scenes that tried way too hard to ensure that she did something sexual in this movie, that will be discussed later. People were still going to see them, and they were making money. Because the audiences are not raising an issue, the writers and directors keep making them and keep making money. Recently audiences have become more aware of accurate representation in movies and there are being movies made that are making strides to move away from stereotypes. In order for this change to continue both audiences and writers need to be more conscious about the content of media and how that content represents people that it is
