Humanism pertains to the individual's sovereignty from a divine power and celebrates critical thinking. This motif of humanity's individualism is exemplified in the visual arts of the italian renaissance such as paintings, sketches and sculptures. The renaissance being a rebirth of Greco Roman ideals, such as humanism, clashed with the ideas of the Catholic Church. The Church being the only entity wethey enough to commission art had their art portrayed to ephesus the the power of god and the common man's reliance. However, when the church lost credibility during the 14th century, the people realized that the church was not the only thing holding them together. Henceforth the igation of thinking that companded to the renaissance began.
