With the rise of industrialization occurring during the late 19th century the conditions for laborers in any industry affected by this revolution worsened due to the demand for ever increasing efficiency. Industrialization occurring at the end of the 19th century created a degrading work environment that led laborers to unionize and demand the opposite. As industry exponentially grew after the Civil War, the need for labor and materials to power newly-created manufacturing giants caused new social classes to form: the rich corporation owners and the poor laborers. Unfathomably rich Robber Barons, or plutocratic American Capitalists, dominated the economy and industry and profited from the slave-like work of millions of poor laborers during this time period. Moreover, the poor working class and the rich further divided by distribution of wealth. Therefore, exploitation of capitalism widened the gap between the rich and poor classes of America, and both newly-formed classes developed reasons for the change.
The Industrial Revolution was a period between both the seventeen as well as eighteen hundreds, and was mainly acknowledged as a time of immense change. Throughout the numerous years, various inventions were shortly to be developed such as the refined Newcomen steam engine, the cotton mill machine, and most importantly, the water frame. Many workers lives during The Industrial Revolution were changed for the positive as many people such as children had a chance to enrich their lives because they were given a purpose (Doc 3).
As the industrial revolution progressed into the Gilded Age, life changed a lot for those in the marginalized populations. Working conditions worsened, women in the workforce increased, and wealthy people believed they were above everyone else. Wealth created huge problems for the marginalized populations due to their bad working conditions which included health risks, little pay, and long hours. The number of factories were increasing so fast that the manufacturers started to disregard their workers. During the Gilded Age, many rich people believed that they had superiority over poor people.
During the 19th century in Great Britain, there was a sudden rise in machines and new inventions that would simplify many difficult jobs for humans. Many workers were forced off farms and into factories to help these machines work. Poor farmers were the only ones who were forced into working in the factories because they had no money. This sudden change in the way society functioned brought up many different arguments from people who had very radical opinions. Although industrialization improved society in many ways, for example, the increase in money and food, it also derailed most of society.
Inequality between wealth, gender, and social class affected the way people were treated during the industrial revolution. Living conditions differed between social classes, the poor lived in horrible conditions. Additionally,
The industrial revolution caused a massive influx of farm workers into urban cities, their farms having been modernized by the seed drill, they came looking for work. mainly unskilled and semi-skilled labor like the textile industry or coal mining industry. After, workers began to demand a higher working condition and higher living condition. People began advocating government reform on things like work hours and child labor, forming things like unions. Some supporters of more radical ideas advocated gender equality and electoral equality, saying that was vital to better life in the working class.
The Gilded Age was an age of rapid economic growth. Railroads, factories, and mines were slowly popping up across the country, creating a variety of new opportunities for entrepreneurs and laborers alike. These new inventions and opportunities created “...an unprecedented accumulation of wealth” (GML, 601). But the transition of America from a small farming based nation to a powerful industrial one created a huge rift between social classes. Most people were either filthy rich or dirt poor, with workers being the latter.
Technology and machinery played a great role in the working class due to better production of goods. The quality and quantity of the goods being produce rose because of the advancements of technology as well as machinery. Although technology and machinery advancements were one of the positives that seemed to help the working-class it also hurt them. The machines were more productive than the workers were and this meant that businesses replaced workers with machines. As a result of this many of the working-class lost their jobs and were sent to find work other places.
The Industrial Revolution cast its shadow upon European cities and towns. Some enjoyed this shade while others suffered tremendously because of it. Those who enjoyed the luxuries and wealth that the Industrial Revolution provided, the bourgeoisie, depended on the needs of the poor, the proletarians, to increase the size of their monstrous factories and ultimately their wealth and influence. In “The Communist Manifesto” Karl Marx discusses the effects of the Industrial Revolution in further dividing society by creating new social and economic hierarchies. In addition to his observation of the division of labor, Karl Marx believed, that due to the technological shift from craftsmanship to machinery this also caused division of labor and the appreciation of proletarian handmade goods was disregarded.
The Industrial Revolution brought many changes to the lifestyle and way work was completed for citizens of Britain between 1750 and 1900. Machines that provided effective, cheap and fast production of goods began to replace the jobs once held by people. This development effected many groups of workers, but especially those in the textile industry. The introduction of machinery had a significant impact on the lives of these industrial workers due to the low and high demand for goods, unfair wages and unhealthy and dangerous working conditions it inaugurated. The lives of industrial textile workers were significantly impacted by the Industrial Revolution.
I believe social classes have defined our society in many ways. In America, they separate people into three different classes: the upper class, middle class, and the lower or working class. Based on wealth and various occupations, social classes determine the population’s status in society. Social classes today define individuals and influence their actions. Although people born in a certain class may choose to stay there, they also have the choice of leaving.
I have a strong interest in mental health nursing because, as I have learned in class, it is not only seen in psychiatric wards, but it is actually seen everywhere. I am particularly interested in mental health nursing because I have seen some of my relatives and friends suffer with their mental health. It is sadly present in all ages and is often brushed off on its impact in people's lives. I believe that it is important to know the early signs and triggers that might indicate a person needs help. I have seen in clinical that people with mental health illnesses need a lot of support from their loved ones and from health professionals.
A major debate among Historians is if the Industrial Revolution was helpful or harmful. The industrial revolution created a big change in the society of America. It was an age of innovation and creativeness for the inventors of the world. It was an age of sorrow and despair for the workers of the world.
