Young Americans and Their Effect on Popular Culture Young Americans have made a tremendous impact on popular culture as a result of the products of youth culture. Youth culture has in a sense, become popular culture, as the trends and norms of the decade are mostly influenced by adolescents. Whether the effects of youth influence on popular culture have been positive or negative, they have without a doubt made their impact on todays society. Today's youth has changed political and social culture forever. The widely used social media, Facebook was not always dominated by adults. Around 2010, Facebook was one of the main forms of social media for preteens and adolescents. Before Facebook, there was myspace, and aim, both completely populated by teens wanting to post, share, and communicate. Nowadays, Facebook is mostly just used by adults wishing to communicate with family and friends, and keep up with current events. But without the demand of social media by teens, adults may have never seen the use in such a convenient form of communication. As of today, media sites and apps like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are almost completely dominated by youth. On these apps, teens are free to post whatever they want, and express their views in a public manner. From politics to comedic posts, anything can be shared at any time, which, has in a sense, given teens more power then they have ever had in the past. In the past 5 years, we have seen a spike in young adults involvement in politics, and a huge part of this is due to social media. Not but a few years ago, music and dance was a completely different concept. Starting in the 90s and spanning out to today, the 2010s, our music culture has become widely based around the idea of sex. As teens have become more provocative over the years, so has their music. Rap and hip hop is one of the most popular genres of today, with popular artists usually rapping about several kinds of risque actions. Over the years, rap has changed from mildly vulgar, to promoting words and verses that the mind can't even imagine. As teens, we listen to this music often, with no regard for what the artists are truly saying, for if we did for once listen, we would be appalled. Today, we live in the “hookup culture,” where it is considered the norm to have immediate physical interactions, without even knowing a person. Due to constant exposure to images and videos online, teens have adopted a culture that has completely transformed into the norm. The Federalist concludes, “Girls are being exposed at a very young age to a lot of explicit content… Social media sites and pornography sites are kind of conjoined at the hip…and if you have a kid on social media, it’s pretty likely that at some point they are going to see pornography”(“Social Media…”).
