The Field Guide to the North American Teenager written by Ben Philippe, is about a Black, outspoken, sarcastic teenage boy named Norris Kaplan, who moves from Montreal to Austin, Texas. He navigates his way through his parents’ divorce, a new country, racism, romantic feelings, and teenage life in general. To overcome the struggle of moving to a new country, Norris writes in his journal, finds a job to save money, and starts a hockey team. We live in a society in which conformity is not only encouraged but often rewarded. As my grandfather used to always say, “It’s the [penguin] who is different that gets left out in the cold.” Sure, many try to push the narrative that we ought to lead, and that being divergent is what makes one “special.” But while this may be true in a purely academic sense, socially, those who do not abide by unspoken norms are typically outcast as pariahs; they are considered the “undesirables.” As such, many teenagers change their personality by emulating others in attempt to gain acceptance into certain social cliques.
The 1960’s was one of the most tempestuous decades in American history, remembered for its nationwide protests against the vietnam war and strive for political change. During this decade, a group of people called hippies, emerged and created their own liberal counterculture by refusing to participate in mainstream society. Hippies were white, well-educated, middle class adolescents who were products of the “baby boom” generation. As Hippies entered their early twenties in the late 1960’s, they began to advocate for individual freedom and highly promoted people to “do their own thing”. At the same time, they rejected any ideas of conformity and materialism that their parents had constructed and abided by the decade before them.
The documentary, Merchants of cool, describes an evolving relationship between the vast teenage population and corporate America. The film provides an in-depth look at the marketing strategies and communication between these groups. Adolescents are shown as learners and adapters of the fast-paced world; they’re constantly exposed to fashions and trends. These young adults have a lot of disposable income and are willing to spend it, in order to gain social popularity. In other words, they are chasing ‘cool’.
A new generation brings in a new, different culture. And somehow, it goes from different to rebellious. The adult American society will often look at the youth subculture’s homology: their choice of clothes, music, dance, and their overall lifestyle, and they will just begin to form these “personality conflicts” (O’Connor 412). If adults, more specifically parents, begin to have better understanding of why their subculture is often so different, then they will be able to relate to and raise “better” teenagers. This does not mean that every elder and adult has to embrace youth culture, but there should be an attempt to have a better understanding of it.

Life in America is not a struggle between being an individual and being a member of the community. The United States were founded on the principles of freedom; anyone can be or do anything if they so please. In fact, nonconformity is becoming more popular than conformity with the advent of social media and new, various ways to connect with others. As a millennial, I grew up in a world where I was not shepherded into a community. Day in and day out, there was no social repercussion for not “being cool” or wearing the “right” clothes.
Punk Youth Against America Punk started in the late 60s to early 70s as a response to the hippie movement, against the laid-back passive activism and developed into a vibrant subculture that believed in making a loud violent impact in the name of change. As UK punk bands like sex-pistols and the clash made its way to America many bands such as the ramones began to form and punk scenes began to form and spread. Between the late 70s to the modern day, the integration of punk culture and music in America has changed the perception of the youth against societal roles by challenging the mainstream media, promoting unconventional lifestyles, and encouraging a change in attitude toward society and the government in America. Youth culture can pertain to interests in styles, music, clothes and sports. It also pertains to behaviours, beliefs, and vocabulary; this refers to the ways that teenagers conduct their lives. The concept behind youth culture is that adolescents are a subculture with norms, morals, behaviours and values that differ from the main culture of older generations within society. For instance, young men and women, teenagers in this case, are mostly represented as unpredictable and not easy to understand. In the film, Mean Girls directed by Mark Waters (2004), adolescents are represented as bullies, who use manipulation to achieve what they want and are two-faced with the people around them; they are constantly stereotyped as a high social group like the plastics and a low social group like the mathletes; also they are presented as young people that fall under peer pressure, and are overly concerned about their appearance and about being socially accepted.
Georg Simmel played a very important role in the study of small groups. In his work, Simmel expressed his view of society, his view of sociology, and his view on the individual in modern society. He conducted his studies of monads, dyads, triads, small groups, large groups, and the dynamics between them and concluded that that groups of people and their interactions were tied to the individual within society (Ford 2015). Interestingly, Simmel believed that fashion was connected to identity expression and individualism which resulted in a certain conformity and uniformity among groups. Teenagers have become much more focused on what he or she looks like. This is because, they are searching their identity, and trying to be someone that the media expects them to be. With social media, comes the stereotypical version of what a man or woman should be like. For example, women are expected to dress sexy, and have the perfect barbie doll body. Whereas men, are expected to be muscular and tall.
Is Social Problems Among Teenagers An Increasingly Worrying Phenomenon? Nowadays, social problems are one of the major concerns in society and the condition got worsen year by year, mainly contributed by teenagers. Social problems emerged due to influences of the bad cultures from other countries. Teenagers cannot identify and differentiate between good and bad conducts.
