As of today, you will find that many young adults do not know how to save and spend their money wisely. This is because teens see others wearing clothing or using items that have become popular. Making others want it to fit in. In a survey by Gobankingrates they found that 62% of Americans have less than a thousand dollars in their savings account. Why? Because it's all going towards clothes, hair products, shoes, and other things Americans buy in excess to be like the others. Trends blind and rob you of your sense on smart and not smart ideas. They are much like an addiction. Once addicted you need more and more of whatever it is your addicted to. In this case, it would be spending money to level up in that new game, getting Starbucks daily or spending $50 on that new shirt. In Bill Bryson's novel I'm A Stranger Here Myself the author discusses in one chapter how people in America are very wasteful. How we leave electronics running all night long simply because we are lazy. In chapter 45 Bill Bryson states, "Why, after all, go through the irksome annoyance of waiting twenty seconds for your computer to warm up each morning when you can have it at your beck by leaving it on all night?" Americans are in love with trends and follow them with an unhealthy obsession. How many likes your photo got on Instagram or where the best lighting is for your selfie is one of many things on teenagers brains, next to who's wearing what and what style of shoes are in. Just for what they feel is acceptance. Let's not forget that flashy photo with 56 likes your family is definitely gossiping about. Including the normalcy that 10% of Americans nowadays put themselves as risk just for one last Snapchat. I believe that America would not be anywhere close to the society I grew up in without these things.
