One could say that Walt Whitman was one of the most praised poets in America. He is best known for writing Leaves of Grass. Most of his literary work expresses his vibrant emotions towards the individual's soul. Whitman also has a large amount of literature that covers life and death. One of Whitman's greatest influences in writing was his own love for his country. Another one of his influences was democracy. Whitman believed that each individual should be able to set his or her path. He disagreed with people being of being controlled by others. Optimism was a key attribute of Walt Whitman. Walt Whitman had a very chaotic childhood. He was born on the 13th of May in 1819.
His hometown was West Hills, Long Island but his family moved frequently. He moved to different house around Long Island and Brooklyn. When Whitman was twelve years of age, he became an apprentice for a printing school in New York. He was very humbled for this opportunity because his father barely had enough money to get him into school. Whitman had many different younger brothers. Some of his brothers were successful in life but others were not as self driven as Whitman. Walt Whitman was greatly influenced by his mother. In the future Whitman will write about his admiration for his mother in Leaves of Grass. In 1831 Whitman entered the printing trade. Soon he began his newspaper career. His first real job was being the editor of a magazine called the Aurora (Nathanson). In 1846 he got promoted to editor of the Daily Eagle (Nathanson). When Whitman became the editor of this magazine, he wrote from
