Two different views of the world. American poet Walt Whitman was one of the world’s most important poets. Walt Whitman’s life wasn’t a bad life. Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819 in West Hills, Long Island, New York. One of Whitman’s most famous poems was “O Captain! My Captain!” and he was inspired to write it by the death of Abraham Lincoln, despite the fact that, as far as anyone can tell, they had “never paused for a proper conversation.” (McCarter 4). Whitman was one of the, if not the, first poets to write about both science and religion. Walt Whitman uses science in a majority of his poems to prove that it isn’t that bad. Edgar Allan Poe had described science “as a vulture preying on the heart and the imagination” (Sloan 14)
