Walt Whitman was born in West Hills, New York on May 31, 1819. He was a member of a very large, poor family, so he didn’t get much education. He wasn’t widely respected but eventually he was and continued writing poems until he died at 72 in Camden, New York. When Walt Whitman was 36, he self-published “Leaves of Grass” (which may be the most influential volume of poetry in the history of American literature). He was considered one of the most influential poets. He inspired many aspiring writers. When Walt Whitman was three he moved with his family in Brooklyn. During the Civil War, Walt Whitman worked as a military nurse at a hospital, tending to the wounded, reading to them during their recoveries, and helping them write letters home.Some
