Since high school I have come across words like Information Technology as I have a science background. Thus, I had a sceptic outlook towards this course – ENGG1150. But after taking this course and throughout 3 months, I can positively say this course has benefitted me. I have gained insight into breakthroughs in Information Technology and how it impacts multiple fields and industries. Information technology, also called the second machine age, is the key behind all the information processing taking place today. With the advent of transistors, there have been the revolutionary changes. I still remember the first lecture of this course where the professor asked us what we thought was the greatest advancement in the second machine age and I …show more content…

We moved to the concept of Transistors and its widespread uses. The Moore’s law and Integrated Circuit paved the way to the study of logic gates. The simple and analytical calculations helped us to open up my mind towards the how data is coded. I learnt concepts such as source and channel coding; and how accuracy is achieved by implementing checks such as a parity bit or by using check sum. I also learned about the various semiconductor industries focusing primary on Taiwan semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited. Besides this, we also got hands on knowledge about internet age. Internet has now been an integral and essential part of our daily life. With one click we can access any information sitting at any corner in the world. With the unaccountable benefits of internet we also pondered on the telecommunication industry. He gave us information about how telecommunication industry is progressing. From the telephones that used 1G to the mobile phones that use 4G, the telecommunication industry has truly transformed. The development in communication mediums over the years from copper to optical fibres makes gigabit internet possible. Therefore, the way we communicate has …show more content…

The technology which will have an impact in the future is Cloud. Cloud offers unlimited storage over the internet to store the data. Cloud also has the advantages of easier access of information and cost effectiveness as it has multiple flexible payment options. I use Google Drives and Dropbox to share my documents. These examples of cloud computing are extremely useful. It is hard to imagine the number of ways that the cloud touches our lives, it is everywhere around us, from emails to all social networking; and it has huge applications in all businesses by the way of increasing efficiency. [] However, Cloud has various drawbacks and the most significant ones are security and privacy. The data over the internet is prone to come into the hands of those its not intended for. Recently, iCloud was hacked and many private pictures and documents were leaked. This raises serious concerns among the users of the cloud. Again, it is because of this course that I got an opportunity to study this particular technology in detail and analyse its implications in the
