What is distracted driving? Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger the driver, passengers, and bystander safety. I believe that it is extremely important to emphasize the dangers of distracted driving among all drivers, but most especially teenagers—in this age of new technology. I do think that many drivers are aware of the dangers of driving distracted, but it is also possible that they simply decide not to follow the rules. Did you know that 37,000+ people die in automobile crashes in the U.S every year? It is completely astounding. The problem is not that we don’t teach drivers at all, but may it be because we don’t teach them enough? The first mobile telephone was invented in 1973. It was big and bulky and hard to carry. Since then, the cellular phone has gotten smaller, but at the same time, has expanded its capabilities. With the 70’s phone, you were only able to make a call—and that's it. But today, in 2017, you are able to have a calculator, a camera, the internet, map directions, health monitoring, calendars, etc. Cellular phone usage is one of the most widely reported causes of death under the topic of distracted driving. For this reason, I think that it is important to teach drivers the dangers of distracted driving more than we already do. In 2011, 3,331 people were killed in accidents caused by distracted drivers. In comparison, in 2013, 424,000 people were killed in accidents caused by distracted drivers, a 10% increase in death. This percentage has and will be increasing in the coming years if we don’t put more effort into teaching drivers how dangerous it really is when driving
