I: Introductory Funnel Paragraph: A. Attention Grabber/Quote- The Sri Lankan Civil War is notorious for being a conflict in which both sides used children as soldiers. 1.Elaboration- This conflict was between the Sri Lankan Government’s military and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. B. Transition from opening to topic- The tensions first arose when Sri Lanka, then called Ceylon, was under British rule. 1.Elaboration- The British brought in approximately one million Tamil speakers from India to work as laborers on cash crop plantations of coffee, rubber and tea. C. Getting closer to thesis idea- These mostly Hindu Tamils were favored by the British in bureaucratic positions, and the British improved the education system in northern portion of Sri Lanka, where most of the Tamilians lived. …show more content…

Transition to thesis- Now, the Buddhist Sinhalese majority imposed a majority-rule way of government in Sri Lanka. 1.Elaboration- The Ceylon Citizenship act and the Sinhalese-Only Bill served to deprive hundreds of thousands of Tamilians their citizenship and marginalized the Tamil language. E. Transition to thesis- Furthermore, Tamil-speaking students had to receive much higher scores than Sinhala-speaking students on university entrance exams to be accepted because of Sinhala-favoring quotas. 1.Elaboration- All of these laws and acts caused increasing tensions between the Tamilians and Sinhalese of Sri Lanka. F. Thesis- At the turn of the 21st century, the Sri Lankan Civil War was a civil conflict in which the Hindu Tamil minority attempted to secede from the Buddhist Sinhalese majority and create a new sovereign state.
