General Purpose : To persuade
Specific Purpose : To persuade my audience to care for the elderly with respect and dignity
Central Idea : The elderly are often neglected and are vulnerable so we must care for them to prevent untoward incidents. Introduction
I. My father and mother have worked tirelessly to give me and my brothers the life we have today, a life full of opportunities, comfort and privilege.
II. As they age, it is imperative that as their children we return the favour of caring and loving for them.
III. I’m sure this will resonate with many of you as you see your own loved ones age in front of you.
IV. But, why there are elderly still livings under the bridge, on the side of the road and at the bus stop?
A. The Homelessness Research Institute estimates that, if shelter and poverty rates remain constant, the number of homeless older adults will rise from approximately 44,000 in 2010 to about 59,000 in 2020, an increase of 33 percent.
V. This reminds us how far we have come in providing assistance and care to older adults, which is not far at all.
VI. Upon doing extensive research on the abused and neglect among the elderly, I have realised that our society should take extra care for them.
A. According to the statistic by the National Centre on Elder Abuse, the percentage of neglect among elderly is 58.5 per cent.
