Keeping the 9 Month School Calendar Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of advantages of keeping the current 9-month school calendar as opposed to changing to a year-round calendar. Central Idea: The notion of changing from the 9-month calendar to a year-round calendar is a popular discussion on being an improvement to improve the education system in the United States. Teachers would not have the time needed to take additional classes to improve their teaching methods (Somerby 9). " How can a district expect education to improve if teachers can't improve their own personal education?" (Somerby 9). C. Effects on Economy 1. The year round-calendar could have economic issues on various organizations that rely on the summer breaks for business. Campgrounds, amusement parks, and summer activities from churches and other organizations may see lower attendance because of the shorter break (Cooper). 2. There may be a lack of opportunities for older students to have summer jobs Cooper). They will not have the chance to get hands on job experience that they can receive now. Some students may use the money from summer jobs to set a side for use to attend college after they graduate. Farmers will not have their children available during the summertime to help with crops as they have done for generations. 3. The increased costs will be passed on to everyone through a tax increase. It could be by millage for each area which will affect homeowners or by an increase in another tax which could affect us …show more content…

Effects on Students 1. For students already in junior high or high school, year-round school would be a hard schedule to follow (Sevetson 2). A change from the 9-month schedule to year-round would be a difficult adjustment for older students to
