I have had a variety of experiences that contributed to my overall motivation to become a health care professional. However, I consistently had shortness of breath, wheezing, and tightness in my chest during and after my sports competitions, which my parents quickly noticed. Intrinsic asthma is also known as non-allergic asthma, which is induced by factors such as physical or emotional stress, medications, and bacterial or viral inflammations. Laughing and crying, aspirin, and infections like sinusitis or pneumonia could elicit an attack. Extrinsic factors, or allergic asthma, are triggered by allergens that are inhaled into the airways. These allergens can be dust, pollen, cigarette smoke, dander, and even perfume. In some cases, a favorite scent can become a trigger (Morris, 2015) or a pet such as a dog or cat.
Despite having this chronic illness, I am learning how to live and do all of my usual activities. Using my inhalers helps me breathe better, but I must use them each day and before sporting events. Occasionally there have been times when I have forgotten to take my inhaler, and it made a significant difference in my ability to exercise. Learning how to recognize my symptoms has been a crucial part of managing my asthma. Quickly identifying my symptoms and triggers has also been helpful so I can change them before they get out of control.
