The domestic house cat. (Felis silvestris catus) Cute, cuddly, and playful are all words that come to mind when we’re thinking about domestic felines. However, what most ordinary people don’t know is that house cat are actually savage killers. Our feline friends are actually one of the most successful carnivores to have ever walked the earth. I know this because growing up I was always fascinated with cats. My mother owned an animal grooming salon, and we always had at least one or two cats in our house. According to the latest scientific and DNA research, humans have been “attempting” to domesticate cats for the last 9’000 years or so. Now I say attempting because by definition, cats are not actually domesticated. You see, for an animal to be considered “domesticated,” It must be completely dependent on humans, and show considerable change in their DNA as well as in their physiology. Cats can live independently without humans, if they chose to. Apart from the recently new cat breeds, cats look virtually identical to their wild ancestor and the share same appetite for an all meat diet. In fact house cats differ from wild cats by only a difference of 13 genes in their DNA. That means that during all this time, house cats have maintained their wild hunting instincts and the anatomy of a wild cat. This is what makes them successful hunters. In the weapons department, cats are very well armed. They have no less than twenty retractable claws and large canine teeth, relative to body size, made for puncturing and tearing flesh.
