If you've ever had a feeling that's uncomfortable to any degree it's probably pain. This symptom, feeling, discomfort, tingling, burning, soreness, aching or hurt tells your brain that something is wrong with your body and sends it a warning message.
It starts with the nerves and spinal cord and passes the message to your brain and also to other parts of the body.
Underneath and in your skin, lie thousands of cells called receptor cells. They detect light, cold, heat, pressure, touch and pain. Most of the receptor cells will sense pain. A few of them will sense cold.
Whenever you suffer an injury or trauma the receptor cells communicate with your brain by sending messages along the nerves and nerve pathways into your spinal cord. The spinal cord then sends the messages on to your brain.

If you're properly medicated or given pain medication before and during surgery then you won't be able to feel any pain because the messages have been blocked.
Pain can be mild or severe or anything in between. It can be annoying like you might have with an injury from a small cut. Or you might have severe pain after surgery, called post-surgical pain which may or may not be helped by painkillers, drugs or medication. This pain after surgery is a message to the brain that something is wrong or something is going on that needs to be attended to. Sometimes you can't relieve the pain even with drugs or medications.
