As a consumer, knowing what is being put into my food is important. How healthy and fresh our food is, is on many people’s minds. By watching Ingredients by Robert Bates, people can have a better understanding of how consumers should see food differently like farmers do. An understanding of our food system is important so consumers can be aware of the risks people deal with when food is involved.
The vertical market coordination of farmers and chefs helps consumers understand where the food they want comes from. Animals were meant to be free roaming not confined to small areas. Farmers would not put a bunch of humans into a small confinement and limit their food supply, that is considered inhumane, so why are animals being treated as such. The documentary, Ingredients, opened viewer’s eyes about what is going on in concentrated animal feeding operations. In the video, one man says the meat consumers buy in stores comes from a mixture of animals, not just a single animal, so if one of the cows had a disease, then the whole package of meat would be contaminated. Consumers should have the best quality of meats, but animal feeding operations hinder the outcome of meats. There is a higher risk of transmittable diseases from animals to humans in concentrated animal feeding operations (Gilchrist et al., 2006). All consumers should be aware of the risks involved with feeding operations. There have been numerous amounts of meats recalled because of diseases from animals. Another problem that occurs in animal feeding operations is the overuse of antibiotics in the animals. The overuse of antibiotics leads to an increase of antibiotic resistance in animals (Gilchrist et al., 2006). Many consumers do not know how safe meat is to use, animals should not be treated in inhumane ways because they will become ill and those illnesses can be spread to humans, then humans must suffer the consequences for eating bad
