The import-export company which a juvenile Hamilton worked at sometimes dealt with slave ships. When this happened, it was part of Hamilton’s responsibility to inspect, groom and house the slaves.

Hamilton proposed an excise tax. He wanted to tax the production sale or consumption of a commodity on distilled whiskey production in the United States. In 1801, his eldest son Philip of 19, named after his grandfather, had been shot and killed in a duel defending his father’s honor (Trees, Andrew S), also depicted in the play in the songs Blow Us All Away, and the Stay Alive Reprise.
