I just want to start off by saying I was honored to meet former Olympian Billy Mills. He is a very wise man and I can tell his time is very valuable to him and I’m pleased that he chose to come spend time with us up close and personal at Western Michigan University. I have learned so much from the inspirational and motivational speech Billy Mills came to tell us because there are a lot of similarities between him and myself. He talked about his experience growing up with no one to tell him he can do anything, Racial discrimination, suicide thoughts, and poverty. He overcame his struggles by finding power in himself to keep his self esteem up even if that meant breaking down to get back up. He was a colored person which back in those days that he was starting his running career was hard for anyone of color to succeed. Mills was also orphaned at the age of 12 and grew up in poverty but still put his energy into something positive. It actually took me a year to figure out if I wanted to continue my education after High School because I didn't think I was going to be able to afford to go to a University. I come from a household where we live “comfortable” meaning we have what we need and it's hard to get the things we want. I also wasn't confident enough in the school I wanted to pick or the Major I wanted to declare either. It was also hard to find motivation because no one in my family on my Mom or on my Dad’s side had been to College. Another thing that was kind of holding me back was most of the schools I wanted to go to were predominantly White and I didn't think I would get the same opportunities as the Caucasian students or wouldn't find friends because I am African American.
