In addition Montresor traps Fortunato in the catacomb and chains him to the wall in result of his wounded pride. This shows how the theme in “Cask” is also the danger of pride. “Cask” supports this when Montresor states, “THE thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could ; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge.” (). The themes in both short stories play an important role for what happens in the story.
This is represented by, the way Montressor wants to punish Fortunato because of the hatred he has for him and his understanding of why Fortunato has treated him so poorly. Also the way Montressor makes it seem like revenge is the right and necessary thing to do to correct the wrong Fortunato has done to him. As well as, how Montressor ultimately manipulates Fortunato.
In this essay I will explain how Montresor’s execution of Fortunato was carried out like an expert. I will list examples of how Montresor manipulated Fortunato, and how he enjoys his revenge. In this story Montresor, the murderer, used reverse psychology, and utilized cunning precondition to fulfill his scheme. He also used clever paronomasia to deceive Fortunato. Montresor first manipulated Fortunato when he met him at the carnival.
•Montresor does fulfill this definition of revenge. He boasts about how it has been fifty years since his crime and nobody has “disturbed” the catacomb that he has enclosed Fortunato. Regarding the second part, it is questionable. The fact that he is still telling this story a half century later may suggest that he is obsessed (“overtaken”) with his crime. And the third part, he did make himself known to Fortunato because Fortunato cries “For the love of God, Montresor” as he is being enclosed in the catacomb wall.
Unfortunate Fate in “The Cask of Amontillado” From the beginning of the of the story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator, Montresor, opens the story stating that the “thousand injuries” and irreparable insult caused by Fortunato won’t stay unpunished, and he seeks for revenge (Poe 467). Poe creates a sense of terror while he guides the audience to the unexpected revenge. The terror that Poe creates in the audience is only successful due to the use of literary elements. The use of symbolism, foreshadowing, and irony are essential to build the suspense that guides the reader throughout the story to a tragic ending.

Evidently, Fortunato injured and insulted Montresor, who says that he has endured peacefully as Fortunato repeatedly offended him thousands of time. Fifty year ago, Fortunato use to deny what Montresor would say about, who he was or what he had done, as if it was untrue. Montresor would argue back and forth with him explaining that it was true.

To explain, Montresor was insulted by Fortunato, the resolution to this conflict should have been as simple as confronting Fortunato with his hurt feelings. Instead, Montresor decides “[he] would be avenged” (Poe 543). Because of the dramatic way Montresor decides to resolve the conflict between himself and his friend, his character is shifted towards an unruly one. Montresor has no regards for those around him, he has no insight to anyone but himself. As a result of the way he chooses to resolve conflicts, he allows the conflicts to take control of his every action.

In this story, we observe how a character with such power and intelligence easily turns into a mad man who has devised a plan to murder an innocent man over a plebian conflict the two experienced. In one statement, Montresor says, “I must not only punish but punish with impunity” (Poe 1). In short, Montresor is implying that killing Fortunato is the fair thing to do and that he should be exempt from punishment for doing so. If I were to kill a classmate because he insulted me, I wouldn’t be exempt from punishment. Poe shows us that we can’t hold back our strange and uncivilized urges to get revenge on those who dishonor or hurt us.

Montresor’s family motto translates to: no one provokes me with impunity. Fortunato has insulted Montresor, which seals his fate in Montresor’s eyes. Once someone has insulted Montresor, that someone can expect punishment. The family motto confines Montresor’s mind into believing that Fortunato must be killed. Despite the lack of vindication for Fortunato, Montresor is bound to be affected negatively by the murder.
