Professional environments such as jobs, school, or other organizations all share a common characteristic, each of which having their own sets of rules and regulations; among these could include something called an honor code, which is meant to be a promise to abide by certain rules, typically cheating in an academic setting. A lot of people want to believe that the honor code is taken seriously by at least most people, but the fact of the matter is that little to nothing is enforcing these “promises of honesty”. While many colleges implement honor codes as a means of ensuring academic integrity, it has proven to be ineffective and quite contradictory for a variety of reasons. In schools cheating is something that is looked down upon and seen as a huge issue to teachers and administration. There are multiple methods that have been used to stop this dishonest actions however, the honor code is the most well known. Many schools have unique versions of the honor code but, they all have the same goal. Cheating is a serious topic and should not be tolerated however some honor codes don’t do the best job in controlling the students. My school does not have a harsh and over the top honor code which is a good thing and should be maintained.
Throughout my high school education, I have found myself being unable to trust my peers as I have been told to cover my answer sheets during tests, or have seen other students on their phones during quizzes that I had studied hours for the night before. In my school, cheating runs rampant as many students feel that there is no consequence as it has been deemed socially acceptable, many teachers don’t discuss repercussions for cheating at the beginning of the year, and it is not very difficult to difficult to cheat. In fact, as outlined in Source F, two thirds of students surveyed at the collegiate level admit to acts of academic dishonesty. The same source found that “the highest levels of cheating are usually found at colleges that have not engaged their students in active dialogue on the issue of academic dishonesty,” (Source F). Although many would believe that implementing an honor code would stir further distrust among students as they are told to suspect and report each other, I believe that an honor code in my school would set an important precedent for academic honesty, as there is currently little to no social pressures around cheating.
An honor code can be so effective that “many schools with academic honor codes allow students to take their exams without proctors present, relying on peer monitoring to control cheating” (Source F). Despite this system, there is research that “indicates that the significantly lower levels cheating” (Source F) at schools with honor codes. This is possible because there is a peer culture that denounces cheating, making kids embarrassed to commit academic dishonesty. Such a peer culture was formed by educating the students about the value of academic dishonesty.
That aside not every student will take a pledge and feel obligated to stop cheating or to be completely honesty. This could be the flaw in the honor code, stating that the students take a pledge to not use plagiarism or cheat which means that not every student will have the integrity to not cheat when he/ she didn’t study for a test and has the integrity to be honest to the educator that they have
Integrity is defined as obedience and loyalty to a moral code which is reflected in how one thinks and acts (BusinessDictionary.com, 2015). What would integrity mean to me as a professional? I would say that integrity is about being honest in everything you do. I believe that even if I do not personally do something that would question my integrity as a person and that if I keep silent about witnessing someone else who has done something questionable like accepting a bribe; my own integrity will be questioned.
When a student cheats, especially those students that cheat often, they are essentially obtaining a false degree. In a worst case scenario, for example, a student were to cheat in their classes all through medical school, obtain a degree, and then become a doctor. They did get through school with a perfect GPA. But the problem is, this doctor has not retained any information and does not know how to perform a surgery. This is a far-fetched example, many people perhaps believe.
Integrity is a term used to describe a person 's level of honesty, moral commitments, and willingness to do what 's right. Choosing what is right over what is fun, fast or easy, and choosing to practice our values rather than simply professing them. Given the real definition of integrity, we recognize that it is actually extremely difficult to be in integrity 100% of the time. We aspire to be in integrity with what we believe but sometimes, we mess up. Sometimes, our emotions get the best of us and we are unable to manage our behavior and actions.
As leaders, it is important to communicate our priorities and values so that every Soldier knows what is expected. Reading and absorbing this philosophy will give you a solid ground for what is expected from you and what you can expect from me. Rely on the Army values to help you make good decisions. In particular, remember the following values: • Integrity: Having integrity is, to me, one of the most important Army values. Having integrity means you do what is right even when no one else is around.
"A man of integrity," my father claims, "is a man worthy of anyone 's respect. " During my childhood years, my father consistently drilled into my mind that integrity is the most important quality that one could possess. Because I was relatively young at the time, I never understood the definition of the word or the magnitude of the lesson. I would mull over the idea in my mind, plunging deep into my thoughts: How would this apply to my life? As I have grown older, I have become more familiar with the word because of my experiences in sports, in class, and in life.
A career in policing requires an individual to meet a high standard for character and demonstrated behavior, in order to be developed into an effective officer. Succeeding in a police academy requires the candidate to display and apply integrity, a skill which must be developed before receiving admission. Integrity demonstrated through a police officer’s personal life, provides the foundation for a respected career. When presented with the opportunity to leverage a peace officer’s position for personal profit, an individual who has previously made selfless choices, is more reliable for operating within the law. Integrity as a term has the social implication of following ones beliefs, regardless of the opposition.
Despite this, I rather acquire my grades knowing that I earned them than by being manipulative and sneaky. Throughout my school life, I have faced with several opportunities to cheat. But each time, I have refused to do so. I may not receive straight As, but I am proud and honored to say that I earned my grades through my persistent work. For many of my peers, they cannot say the same.

We are taught the difference between the right and wrong since our childhood but are always told that the lying and cheating always makes things difficult but when students go to school and college they are faced with different dilemma as then the cheating seems to be the easier way to get good grades. They do not really see cheating as the wrong way of doing things they see it as an easy way of doing things .They do not even consider it as an unethical thing because they have been taught that to do the right thing is the easy way .They are taught that the right path and the ethical path is always the easy one but in reality that is not true. The ethical and right path is difficult and complex as J.K.Rowling has said, “Sometimes we must choose between what is right and what is easy.”
