Amanda Hodge Ashton Bartley Disability 10/31/2016 Disability Interviewing someone with a disability that is in no way "normal" is what most would call a "unique" experence. Kelsey reports her younger sister Mia and herself would hide in their bedroom because their parents would always fight and argue over something as small as why the dishes are not done, and as big as the money problems they're having. Kelsey remembered how hard that was on her mother to go through and how hard it was on her life as well. Kelsey reported that she had to mother her little sister for the longest time because clients father left them her mother wouldn’t come out of her room for more than half day for years.
There are numerous assessments that can be done to determine if a person has intellectual disabilities and at what degree they have. There are three components to test to figure out if a person has intellectual disabilities and they are adaptive behavior, intellectual functioning and the support those people need from others. By giving these tests out, a teacher or mentor can figure out different ways to help develop programs that best fit the needs of that specific child and also figure out the specific services needed to help them academically. In order to figure out a child 's present level of performance (PLOP) within their intellectual disability, there have to be assessments to figure out what strengths and deficits that child has in social,
Social welfare Policy Paper: Americans with Disabilities Act As social workers we have the opportunity to work with different populations of people. The population that I have decided to pursue are individuals with mental illness. Legislation can have a major impact on my career as well as the individuals we serve. In this paper I am going to discuss the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it relates to Social work values.
It is clear from the literature that the community needs to start viewing people with intellectual disabilities as sexual beings, with the same rights as everyone else, not some asexual object which requires sterilisation (Bass, 1963; Hillier, Johnson, & Harrision, 2002; Pfeiffer, 1994; Aunos & Feldman, 2002). As professionals trying to support people with intellectual disabilities, it has been suggested by literature that you need to maintain an open mind, and foster a positive attitude to assist this group efficiently and effectively (Aunos & Feldman, 2002; Mayes, Llewelyn, & McConnell, 2007; Mitchell & Butler, 1978). The pre- and post-natal care of a child, as well as supporting persons with varying intellectual or physical disabilities, by all accounts looks like an incredibly hard task, yet as a Disability Case Manager it is your job to create goals, manage resources and implement plans, to ensure the needs and best interests of your clients are, to the best of your ability, met (Meppelder, Hodes, Kef, & Schuengel,
They suggested that clinicians’ bias towards individuals with intellectual disability often resulted in undiagnosed medical issues. (Reiss et al 1982, Quoted in European Journal of Paediatric Neuropathy 2015). In other words, Diagnostic Overshadowing overlooks the patients’ physical symptoms and dismisses them as part of having an intellectual disability. This was further evidenced by the doctor not attempting to discuss the patients’ mental health needs or their understanding of what health meant to them (there was no exploration to assess if the patient needed any support to access services.) to be reviewed depending on type of
1.1 Describe the causes and effects of complex disabilities and conditions. Mental health issues ranging from the doubts and uncertainties have become a part of daily routine, towards serious long term situation which can be very complex for managing and having a diversifying impact on the overall live of the people. The usual child health leads to contribute towards overall development (Watson & Le Couteur, 2011). Therefore it is important to take special care of people with complex disability as they turn out to be sensitive enough about the situation and environment they are living in.
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law enacted in 1990 and reauthorized in 1997 and 2004. It is designed to protect the rights of students with disabilities by ensuring that everyone receives a free appropriate public education (FAPE), regardless of ability. Furthermore, IDEA strives not only to grant equal access to students with disabilities, but also to provide additional special education services and procedural safeguards. Special education services are individualized to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities and are provided in the least restrictive environment. Special education may include individual or small group instruction, curriculum or teaching modifications, assistive technology,
An Evaluation of the Social-Cognitive Manifestations of Specific Learning Disabilities Student’s Name Institution Affiliation An Evaluation of the Social-Cognitive Manifestations of Specific Learning Disabilities Social-Cognitive Manifestations Specific learning disabilities are usually manifested through various social and cognitive aspects that can be used to shed light into the common emotional, behavioral, and cognitive difficulties that students often experience. The evidence presented in this study also suggests that there are many reasons which prevent individuals with learning disabilities accessing effective health care. Further organisational barriers were presented which may impede effective communication between patients and staff. It may be that the need for written forms of communication or the use of poor signage caused issues for these individuals as reduced literacy skills may make it difficult to comprehend these types of communication. Rigid appointment systems may be a barrier to accessing health care if the patient is unable to tell the time or manage their time effectively. Tuffrey goes on to suggest that it is essential that staff have the appropriate attitude and knowledge to treat vulnerable patients and reasonable adjustments need to be made to address some of the barriers preventing this.
Imagine receiving a task of writing simple alphabets with your toes, and being expected to complete it without any help rendered. Does it not seem like an impossible feat? This is exactly how it feels like for people who suffer from mental disabilities to write out letters A to Z using their hands. Just thinking about it, I can already imagine the frustration. Looking at the bigger picture, imagine the anxiety and anger that they face everyday, having to wake up daily to try and complete a series of tasks that society expects of you, although it is much harder for you to.

The purpose of the research was to investigate the coping styles and strategies of students who have learning disabilities and to compare them with students without learning disability. The research hypotheses is there would be no difference in means for the coping styles and strategies among the pre-intervention means of the study group (students who had learning disabilities) and the published means of students (general population) as measured using the Adolescent Coping Scale. The independent variables are the coping styles and strategies of students who have learning disabilities and general population students.

Module 3 listed what could factor into the student’s school day which included social, emotional, and economic challenges due to their illness. These students may need more time to get from place to place, more time to rest, and may experience side-effects from medication. Students with intellectual disabilities struggle because of developmental delays which hinder them from interacting with their peers. Consequently, they may show frustration sooner because they have not learned to control their emotions. As a teacher, my job is to be aware of these influences that may hinder my student from learning, so that I can accommodate my teaching to fit the needs of my student, and instead emphasis their
