Can an artificial creation truly be human? In Gris Grimly’s “Frankenstein”, Victor Frankenstein dedicates his work to create a creature made of dead body parts. When the creation doesn’t turn out as intended, Victor runs away and the creature is left alone without any guidance for the world he came into. He faced many discriminations because of his wretched form but still develops to be emotionally and generally intelligent. Based on his qualities the creature is a human by heart. Throughout Gris Grimly’s “Frankenstein”, the creature shows his intelligence in numerous ways. In all the panels in pages 91-97, the man and woman that live in the cabin are upset since they don’t have any food to eat. Once the creature notices this, he sympathizes with the couple, crying. The creature copies him with intentions to provide, help, and ease the worries of the couple. This demonstrates the creature’s empathy as he can feel for others and himself. It also displays his compassion since he helped people in need, gaining nothing from it. Additionally, all the pictures on pages 99-100, illustrate the creature noticing the family’s conversation. Eventually, he learns to understand the words and learns when and how to apply them. This represents the creature’s adaptability as he accommodates people’s cultures and languages by learning them. Similarly, the creature is a social being just like humans. He strives for love and companionship. On page 99, the right bottom panel shows the creature dreaming of being happy with the family.
