The article, written by Richard Weight, made great agreements to what seemed to be towards nationalism. Though, his main point was that allowances were made for the left-intelligentsia’s role in advancing British culture and achievements for the reason that they were looked at as doing the government’s patriotic work. The British intelligentsia also achieved this through overpowering propaganda, to influence the British people and foreigners, while masking it as a regain of patriotism. Weight suggested in the article that propaganda had changed over periods of time. He wrote that during World War II propaganda was much stronger than before and that during World War I there was limited effort made. The main difference was that the first war was a battle where the intelligentsia needed to encourage the hate for fascism to the nation and abroad, while the second war needed to boost the nation’s morale and encourage the support of their allies. It is expected that the amount of trust the British people have in the government has lessened overtime, but there are more propaganda methods used today than before. Still, the intelligentsia was able to keep the classes separated and swaying opinions on foreign issues impacting Britain like Brexit.
