1. Child and the setting The child is a 7-year old Caucasian boy with Russian and Armenian background. Sahak attends a public school in St. Charles Parish and lives with his parents and two younger brothers. The play takes place in his house, in his bedroom, and the door is slightly ajar. Sahak’s mother and the youngest child are in the house, playing in the living room. 2. A description of the play therapy or creative arts technique used I have decided to use playdoh for the play, because it provides endless opportunity of imaginative play and is great way to interact with a child in a relaxing environment. For instance, in the next dialog Sahak uses a range of body movements, facial expressions to show feelings and share information. (10:08) Me: It looks like a flower, look! S: Yes, but it has no leaves. M: What do you have? S: I don’t know. Me: I have a little flower. Smells good. S: Yeah. Also, when we go to the playground, on here, over there, they have flowers. And there is one kind of flower that my mom likes. Me: Oh, and what do you do then? S: Then we have to put our hands in the fence and try to grab it, Me: Aw, OK! S: But I couldn’t grab it, but the wind helped me. Me: What color was it? S: The white ones were too far; I couldn’t get them. I could only get the yellow ones. (etc.) Sahak showed me using his hands the location of the flowers, and I kept a good eye contact, expressing my interest in his story. I also encouraged him to continue, by asking questions, like “What color was it?”. That dialog early on in session facilitated rapport building and demonstrated how by playing with playdoh a child can improve their language skills and interact with others by listening, discussing, taking turns in
