Community Health Systems owns 135 hospitals in 20 states and is one of the largest healthcare companies in the United States today (CHS, Company Overview, n.d.). The 135 hospitals that make up CHS are interdependent upon the parent company. While CHS may provide funding for various capital projects and even build new facilities in some communities, the company is interdependent on the hospitals to provide quality patient care while meeting operational budgets and meeting the healthcare needs of the communities they serve. As an example of interdependence, many entities affect the performance of a healthcare company and a healthcare company has an effect on many different entities (Nassar, n.d.). The entities could range from regulatory to competitive. All healthcare companies must operate in a way that will allow them to sustain their business. Healthcare companies or hospitals could be considered for-profit or not-for-profit, but in either case they must behave ethically, professionally, and in the best interest of the patient. In a healthcare company the patient is the customer and their clinical outcome and satisfaction have a direct impact on certain payers. While patients are the most important relationship a healthcare company has, they are not mentioned on the Interdependence Structure Worksheet because they are not a Company. If the hospitals are not successful in their market and do not provide quality care to the communities they serve they would not be supporting the mission of the corporation. The mission of CHS is ““Passionate People Delivering Excellent Care” (CHS, My Community, n.d.). Interdependently, if CHS is not providing the support and resources to support the hospitals they have failed to support the mission at the macro level (Nassar,
