The internet has become one of the most breakthrough pieces of mass communication since its introduction in the late 80’s. It’s hard to imagine what the world would be like without the internet. Even communist countries like China provide internet; however, the government limits citizens from having access and blocking information sources. Even free countries, such as the United States, are questioning their own motives on censoring the internet. Censoring the worldwide web will have a negative effect because it is a violation of a person’s rights, causes websites to lose their educational and business value, and always results in the people retaliating. In the United States constitution, the first amendment in the Bill of Rights gives citizens the right of freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. This amendment also applies this freedom of exploring the internet without the worry of being silenced or invasion of privacy by the government. Applying an internet censorship law will affect both students and teachers as they become limited on educational resources, which can make teaching and searching information more difficult. Also, businesses who rely on the internet may see declining sales because a customer cannot access their website. Some would argue that a censorship law will make it harder to access adult material in a public environment, but is it worth censoring the whole internet because of it? From personal experience, most public areas, such as schools, already apply global ban filters throughout their internet system based on keywords or website nature. A censorship law acts like these filters, but it will affect an entire nation instead of a local
