Internet Censorship

The Internet has grown rapidly over the past 10 years, and has become a major resource for global communication and accessible information. However, recently there has been ever-growing worries about the information that is currently available on the Internet, and how it can possibly be used to damage society. Because of this, a popular debate has arisen that focuses on wether or not a government has the right to censor a website or information source that they believe is not suitable for the public to view, or can pose a threat to society. In today’s world of advanced technology, people are discovering new ways to make private information available to the public, and in the wrong hands, can cause detrimental effects. Because of this, Internet censorship can be used to protect our military and congress from potential enemies who may take that information and use it against our us. Tim Arango from The New York Times states, “The government’s priorities in Internet censorship are protecting ‘the reputation of political figures’ and religious defamation cases.”

Blasphemy toward holy personages, religious artifacts, and beliefs are forbidden in many countries, and by censoring the internet, they can continue to preserve their traditional cultural values. Many countries with strong religious foundations support the idea that hate speech towards religion is not tolerated, and has no place on their internet. Jason Burke from The Guardian mentions “This law makes posting information of ‘offensive or harmful character’ punishable by up to three years in prison.” While the punishment is severe, it enforces that the internet is not a place for offensive
