Dalton Trumbo’s freedom of speech was stripped away, not only by the government but also by the people of America. He was detained for promoting the idea of communism. His actions were justified by the first amendment. However, he ended up being detained for expressing what he thought. In a way, this happens to be censorship.
Depending on which way one may view a certain circumstance, everyone is a victim of censorship. Unwillingly volunteering our free thinking by a superior influence. Since censorship is active it numbs your brain and may cause you to be for forgetful. The greatest benefit of censorship is that it allows the government to hide information in order to protect citizens. By censoring them they deny their ability to freely express themselves as people and create huge controversy in the communities of many citizens. One example is comedian George Carlin who was forced to censor the content in his acts because people believed that it was too profane for his fans and other people in the audience. Canadians are so used to this concept of freedom of speech that the government barely even bats an eyelash when it comes protests, democracy or change. A lot of Canadians take this for granted and some are even shocked when they hear that other people in the world get killed for speaking their mind. This culture of freedom has instilled an entitlement into Canadians even from when they were young, my daughter included. My daughter Sophie has grown up living a very privileged life, and sometimes look back and I’m amazed at the differences between our childhoods.
When it comes to the government multiple questions are raised, particularly whether they control us or if we actually have an effect on their decisions. Personally I feel the government is definitely controlling us. As a student, I am confined to doing the grueling daily task put in place by the government. Attending school is a prime example of the excessive power the government has. America is supposed to be a nation of freedom founded by our ancestors in the late 1700’s , how much freedom do Americans really have?
By true definition, censorship is the suppression and illegalization of speech, public communication, and other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, or politically incorrect as determined by the government in authority. The purpose of censorship is perhaps to protect the people, however, negative outcomes typically follow when this route is taken to control a governed people. Censorship directly attack the main characters of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and George Orwell’s 1984. Although government censorship was perpetuated to create a whole and perfect society, Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 both demonstrate that censorship brought on by the government negatively controls a community’s thoughts, actions, and their people as a whole.

The government is constantly attempting to take total control over society and its citizens, by regulating what is available, what can and cannot be done, and more. The federal government has censored press on various occasions throughout history, contemporary censorship is practiced in non-governmental organizations and corporations, and in schools, as well as public libraries, books are continuously challenged in hopes of them being removed or banned.
