During the initial conversation with my partner, it was clear that she already had a basis for a goal in mind on how to change an aspect of her health. Although she already had been worked towards incorporating paleo-based meals into her everyday diet, my partner found it difficult to continue these eating habits during the weekend. By utilizing motivational interviewing techniques, I was able to get a better grasp on exactly what my partner wanted to change when it came to her health. To determine where my partner was at in her progress towards reaching this goal, I asked her a series of questions. The first question asked was “Have you thought about changing your eating habits in the last few months?” To which my partner simply responded yes, often. I proceeded to ask about her knowledge of the benefits of having a paleo-based diet. She stated that she had first hand experience with the benefits since she had been trying to incorporate more paleo-based meals and had felt better the more she followed the diet. Additionally, I asked if she had access to paleo-based recipes and food, in which she said she had both. To determine if she was already at the action stage of change, I asked if she had already started eating two paleo-based meals every day. She explained that she does eat two paleo-based meals almost every weekday, but not on the weekends, which is where she really wants to focus. After asking these questions, I determined that my partner was at the preparation stage. She already had been eating paleo-based meals fairly often, however she had not fully committed to eating two paleo-based meals every day. She was past the contemplation stage, however, since she had already begun collecting recipes and even started changing her diet.
