Essay On Interphase And Mitosis

1888 Words8 Pages

Introduction: Have you ever asked yourself how long does it take to make a new cell? Organisms, such as mammals and plants, take around 24 hours to create a new cell. The cell cycle is the process that determines the time that it takes to produce a cell. For those who don’t know, the cell cycle is a sequence of phases that eventually leads to the growth and division of the cell. The amount of time that it takes to complete each phase of the cycle varies per phase. There are two main phases that are found in the cell cycle, they are the following: interphase and mitosis. Mitosis is subdivided into several phases which are prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Each one of the phases of the mitosis has a specific duration. In the case of plant and human cells, the …show more content…

It is important to mention that the duration for each step depends on different factors, such as the checkpoints, the amount of DNA. The type of organism can also be another relevant factor. For example, human cells create a new cell every 24 hours, but mammalian cells that line the intestine can complete the cycle in 9-10 hours (Phases of the Cell Cycle, 2016) . Determining the duration of each cell cycle phase can help significantly in medical terms because with that information physicians or scientists can know how long it will take cells to reproduce themselves and recover from any damage in the organism. In terms of Biology, this determination contributes to a better understanding of the cell. The following document is showing the investigation made by two students with the purpose of being able to recognize the different phases that can be found in the onion root tip and calculate the duration of the interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase of an onion root tip cell . The students predicted the following idea before beginning the procedure: if plants take around 24 hours to complete the cell cycle then the onion root tip cells will take 24 hours to
