Throughout the movie “End of Watch” follows along with Officer Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Officer Mike Zavala (Pena) on their daily patrols in the inner city of Los Angeles. During the course of the movie, there are many things that Officer Taylor and Officer Zavala do that is very common and even accepted among police officers. But, one reoccurring theme is that they use foul language while on duty, act unprofessional, and use excessive force. In addition, Officer Taylor is actively recording his daily activities while on duty with a handheld video camera and lapel body cameras for both himself and Officer Zavala. Even though Officer Taylor was repeatedly told to cease his filming by fellow officers and supervisors he continued his behavior.
Written and directed by Victoria Mahoney, Yelling to the Sky is the story of seventeen-year-old Sweetness O’Hara (Zoë Kravitz), surrounded by a deteriorating family and a challenging and convoluted crime-infested neighbourhood. Sweetness is the daughter of a biracial couple; a manic-depressive, ferocious, alcoholic, white father and a discreet, miserable, black mother and is subjected to racism both from the black and white sides as well as constant bullying at school. The story is set in several locations for example the house, the car, and the movies. In the story it’s the summer time and connie goes through some rough patches with her mom. Connie is fifteen years old and is a freshman in high school. Her mother constantly tells her that her older sister June who is 24, is better than her and wants her to be more like her.
The late 19th century consisted of rigid work hours for children, the growth of strikes, and the use of yellow journalism. It was a challenging time for anyone below the upper class to live in. This is demonstrated throughout Newsies, a Broadway Musical displaying the challenges from this time period. Child labor, a major part of the movie, was the way of life and consisted of young children doing hard work as a vital part of the nation’s economy and income of families of the time. Another part of the movie, strikes, were the people’s way of refusing to work as a result of not getting their desires.
Confrontation and conflict is primarily brought on through the portrayal of social hierarchy and power throughout the movie. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, hierarchy is “a system in which people or things are arranged according to their importance”(Cambridge Dictionary). When people are arranged by importance it can cause conflict and confrontation amongst the groups. We see this within Sal’s pizzeria. Sal is the owner and boss of the pizzeria and he lets his employers and customers know that.
In the movie Silver Linings the actions are Pat Solatano, Sr., Dolores Solatano, Pat Solatano Jr., and Tiffany Maxwell. In the movie Pat Jr’s mother (Dolores Solatano) came and got him from the Karel Psychiatric Facility, in Baltimore, Maryland without Pat Sr., knowing that he was coming home. After the release from his mother he had to live with his parents in Philadelphia. He was supposed to be in the facility for a minimum of 8 months for court orders. The reason the court was involved was because he beat up Nikki, the love of his live.
The Mission (1986) is an Oscar winning, historically based film set in South America during the 1740s meant to convey the tragedy of the fate of Jesuit Missions, a power struggle between the Spanish, the Portuguese, and the Catholic Church, and an abominable loss of life. It seems as though the protagonists in this movie are the Jesuits, conveying an image of peaceful, godly servants, and the antagonists seem to be a mixture of the Portuguese and the Catholic Church as they fight for power in the Americas. At least, this is the director’s assumption of who the “good” and “bad” guys are, but truthfully when looking at history from an unbiased viewpoint the true protagonists could be seen as the Indians of South America while the antagonists
The movie ‘Dementia’ is directed by Mike Testin and gives Gene Jones and Kristina Klebe leading roles. Gene Jones plays the role of a old guy who’s a Vietnam War veteran and as the title suggests eventually gets diagnosed with dementia after having a stroke. The old guy known as George in the movie lives alone and is not very connected to his family but he has a son and a grand-daughter that do come in when he has a stroke, since they aren't as close the grand-daughter has only seen her grandfather like once when she was young. George got divorced while he was young, and the reason for his divorce seems to be that he was very abusive towards the wife, also turns out he was not such a great father either.
