Southeast Asia is a region of great antiquity and incredible religious diversity. In contemporary times, animistic views are often disregarded. It is seen as irrational and illogical as opposed to standard societal norms and behaviour set by modernity. However, in reality, Animism and Buddhism are coexisting, overlapping and complementing each other. Hitherto, syncretism of folk religion and Buddhism in Thai society remains a dominant religion. There are two main types of Phii – the Guardian and the Malevolent – which are respected and feared by many as they can either bring good or harm to one. “Phii” is usually associated with malevolent spirits which are angry, vicious agents who attack any human beings who step into their domain. People are usually advised to avoid provoking or interacting with them unless it is within a ritualistic setting with a professional (A. R. Kapur-fic, p.219).
