Chris McCandless comes from a fairly wealthy family. He grew up with the values his parents imposed onto him; what he should and should not do. At a young age, he was taught that having life goals was essential in reaching success and that education played a major part of it. That is to say, Mr. and Mrs. McCandless had high expectations. McCandless excelled quite a bit both athletically and academically during his time in school. Any parent would be delighted by having such a brilliant adolescent in their home. Seeing that Chris was already meeting those requirements, the expectations would just escalate. All they asked for was that their son would receive a high-level education so that the man the McCandless parents anticipated, would shortly develop. He went about with basic education, and at some point even took some college classes. Which by the way, he did very well in, but considered them to be unnecessary. Attending college to him was just a waste of money and waste of time. As a matter of fact, it is one of the reasons on why he donated all of his money. He thought it could be put to better use. This clearly demonstrates how much education truly mattered to McCandless. Not that learning was a pain to deal with, on the contrary, he was all for it.
