The movie Into the wild written by Sean Penn is a drama/biography type of movie. Which is also based on a true story. The movie is about a wealthy boy who just graduated from college. Instead of profiting from his career, he decided to donate all his savings to a charity. He then cuts himself off from society and sets out to go on a journey into the wilderness. Chris felt trapped by society and wanted to desert it. The theme of the movie is to enjoy the finer things in life and to not focus so much on society. “I’m going to go all the way out there, on my own. No watch, no ax, no map, no nothing. Which symbolizes a rebirth into his new life. In his journal, he writes “ I am reborn. This is my dawn. Real life has begun.”When Chris abandoned his car, he burned his money. He’s trying to make it clear that he’s disinterested in material objects. A little while later he then says to Jan and Rainey “I don’t need money, it makes people cautious”. Chris viewed wealth as an unnecessary creation of society.
In the middle of the movie, the writer gives us a hint of foreshadowing. Jan Burres tells Chris not to rely on the book of berries and in some way he ends up dying because of the book. “That book of yours is cool and all, but you can’t depend entirely on leaves and berries.”It’s unfortunate that Jan ended up being right and that he had mistakenly read the book wrong because he was distracted by his hunger for food.
The theme of Into the wild is similar to the book Catcher in the rye. The main character Holden Caulfield has some similarities to Christopher McCandless. They both want to get away from society. In the book, Holden has fantasies about escaping society. He talks about how he wants to run away into the woods and start a life in his own cabin. Holden talks about all this running away just to cut himself off from society. The similarity with these two is that they both are not into all the material things.
