In the 1920s there were changes in American society that led to new inventions that made America a more developed country. In the 1920s there were many inventions throughout the years which are part of the reason why history calls it “The Roaring Twenties.” Having the automobile around before the 1920s meant that there would be new businesses coming along for the automobiles. During the twenties, the first radio was invented which was big then and still big today. There were also some appliances invented and some other products that we still use today in America’s society. This led to the creation of newly built highways. Cars and new roads made it easier for many new families to move into the suburbs. (Davidson, James) With the new roads built, they had invented traffic signals in 1920. The first four way, three-color traffic lights were invented by William Potts. Another important part of the 1920s was the radio. Almost any family in the 1920s could afford to buy a radio. (Davidson, James) With the invention of the radio there were radio stations being created. At the end of the 1920s, a new invention was the radio for automobiles called a “car radio.” The radio became the leading source of entertainment in the 1920s. Radio put Americans in the stands at baseball games and on the floor of political conventions. The radio turned band leaders, singers, and comedians into household names. (Davidson, James) The first commercial radio station was KDKA. It began broadcasting in Pittsburg in 1920. By 1926, there were more than 700 radio stations and a national radio network called NBC. The kitchen appliances that were invented were the electric blender, the pop up toaster, and the bread slicer. All these appliances are still used today and make life just a little bit easier. The electric blender was invented by Stephen Poplawski in 1922. Stephen Poplawski invented the blender to mix food and beverage items together with a small blade at the bottom of a container. (Time Toast) The electric blender could also crush up food and make it into smaller pieces too.
The pop up toaster was another kitchen appliance invented. It was invented by Charles Strite in 1926. The pop up toaster has heat inside it that makes your bread warm and gives the bread a little crunch.
The last kitchen appliance invented in the 1920s was the bread slicer. It was invented by Otto Frederick Rohwedder in 1928. The bread slicer mechanically sliced the bread loaves. The bread slicer was approximately five-foot long and three-foot high Rohwedder’s bread slicer sliced the bread and it would also wrap it in a wax paper to keep it from going
