Have you ever risked your life for the greater good? When was the last time you weren’t afraid to do the right thing? Has someone ever risked their life for you or someone you love? Irena Sendler saved thousands of children, was creative and bold, and was punished but later rewarded for these actions. Until the year 1940, Irena Sendler was a regular Polish woman. Sendler was a nurse, a Polish social worker until the Germans forced the Jews in and around Warsaw into a barely standing neighborhood called the Warsaw Ghetto. There was little food, clothes, and medicine in the ghetto so people were dying the streets. When Irena heard about this she wanted to help. The 11 ½ feet brick walls surrounding the ghetto did not stop Irena. Sendler was originally sneaking in food and medicine for the people of the ghetto but that was not enough and Irena wanted to do more but didn’t know how. Zegota was a secret organization that snuck jews out of the ghetto and the answer to Irena Sendler’s problem. Sendler joined and became the head of the Child Department. Babies were carried out in sacks, tool boxes and anything small that could easily be carried out. Infants were also hidden under floorboards in ambulances. Older children were put in ambulances and told to act like they were very ill so that Sendler could take them out of the ghetto. Teenagers were led through sewer systems and underground passages. All ages of children were put in body bags and told to act like they had died, which many of these children were not far from. There was no sure way that Sendler or the children would make it out alive but if these children stayed they would surely die. Although it was difficult and risky Irena Sendler never failed to do her best to find innovative ways to help these kids
