The Holocaust is one of the most hatred and horrible things that happened during World War II. Yet, there were still acts of courage and also human decency during the Holocaust. Irena became a hero to many people and still is now till this day because she was a polish nurse that saved the lives of 2,500 children.
Irena was a Polish nurse and a social worker who served in the Polish underground during World War ll. After the German occupation the department that she worked at still continued to take great care of many people in the city. Irena did everything she could to take care of as many Jews as possible, but somehow doing this was practically impossible to do once the ghetto was cut off in November 1940. She always put people before herself and made sure everyone and everything was okay. Irena’s accomplishments were huge because not a lot of people have the courage to do what she did. Irena is a hero because there’s probably only maybe like 10% people or less that did what she did during the Holocaust. She ended up accomplishing what she wanted to accomplish but she did more than that because she didn’t just save the children’s lives but she saved all their families too, each and every one of those kids had Irena Sendler to thank for their future.
Some people may not think of Irena as a hero. They may not think of Irena as a hero because they would think that other people, for example Oskar Schindler did the same thing as her so she wasn't important, but people like Irena Sendler should be known and important because of what she accomplished even when she knew that she was being watched at all times. However everyone has different opinions but Irena did not think of herself as a hero and claimed no action for her credit she said “heros do extraordinary things. What I did was not an extraordinary thing. It was normal.” ( Jewish Virtual Library
