When picking an album to review, I decided upon “Destiny” by Celtic Woman. Celtic Woman is an all-female Irish group consisting of 3 vocalists and one fiddler. I found it interesting that they have three vocalists and one fiddler, but since vocals are the heart of Irish music, it makes sense that they are very vocal heavy. This format has proven to be successful for them because “Destiny” is the group’s 10th album, their 9th consecutive #1 album, and it even earned them their first Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album. Celtic Woman’s genre of music could be classified as Celtic and Adult Contemporary because of their very traditional Irish feel with a hint of soft rock. The group was also able to incorporate multiple languages into the music on this album: English, Irish Gaelic, German, and Italian. In addition to their clever blend of traditional and modern Irish music, I think this is another reason that they have been so successful. They provide music for people to enjoy on a global scale by including different dialects in their work. This is perhaps one of their best innovations as artists; being able to connect with so many different cultures because of their flexible vernacular. In addition, Celtic Woman has found a way to fuse traditional Irish music with contemporary and modern sounds to create sonic magic. Their album is so diverse in the fact that they have developed a cohesive sound consisting of traditional, neo-traditional, and post-traditional elements. Celtic Woman is also innovative in the sense that they have welcomed and parted ways with different musicians and vocalists but are still able to keep their same unique sound.
